Hobbiton is only 50 kms away and is well worth a visit for those that may have loved the movies.
Waitomo caves are only 60 kms away and have an extensive cave system.
Rotorua is only 100 kms away and is famous for its geothermal activity. there a lovely walks through the redwoods, mountain biking, zip lining, white water rafting and of coarse geothermal pools.
Tauranga is one hour away by car, which has lovely white sand beaches,glider flights,geothermal pools (extra nice), very nice walks around an are called the mount.
Auckland is also only 100 kms away 1hr 15 minutes by car with many places to visit, Kelly Tarltons sea life, Sky jump, whitewater park,Weta workshop and many other things.
