About the location

Situated in the stunning Corbieres, the village of Lagrasse is adjacent the Orbieu river and opposite the Benedictine abbey, which legend has it, was founded by the Emperor Charlmagne. It was in fact, originated by the Abbot of Narbonne as a monastery in the 7th century, later becoming an abbey. Originally a fortified settlement, the village is now a classified national monument noted for it`s architectural and historic interest. It is also a listed Beau Village de France.

During the summer it hosts many cultural & musical events including the famous Banquet du Livre (book fair.) There are many restaurants, bars, salon de the, boulangerie, pharmacy, newsagent and hairdresser. Two mini supermarkets provide the essentials and weekly market offers fresh local produce, while in nearby Lezignan, there are larger supermarkets and shops. Other local artisans` shops offer works for sale by artists, potters, leather goods, hand-made soaps, haute couture clothes, and of course, wine. Other activities include designated, supervised river bathing, walking, canyoning, horseriding and some of Europe`s finest beaches are as little as 40 minutes away. The region has a long historic past, boasting ancient sites, abbeys, churches, hilltop castles and the nearby cite of Carcassonne and Canal du Midi are world heritage sites. Fans of Kate Mosse (the author) may recall that the village and area provide a backdrop to some of her novels.
