Coombe Farmhouse

Situated in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Tamar Valley, Coombe Farmhouse is partly 16th Century property made of stone and timber. It is unique and the oldest house in the area. There are many unusual features including granite carvings, open fireplaces, stream in the 1/3 acre garden, conservatory and large farm kitchen / dining room with aga. This is a place that is really lovely at different times of the year - indeed it is quite magical at Christmas as well as in the warmer months.

With views across the valley towards Dartmoor, there are many walks in the surrounding area and it is within an hour away from the beaches of both Cornish coasts. Close by is the lovely Devon market town of Tavistock on the edge of the moor. There are a number of excellent restaurants in the area, opportunities for canoeing, horseriding, fishing etc and the beautiful Elizabethan National Trust property of Cothele is very close by. There is a local train to Plymouth with excellent connections (rail and air) to London.

About the location

The Tamar Valley is an area of Outstanding Beauty. The village of Gunnislake was at one time a mining community and there are now wonderful walks and cycle trails along the river and past the old mines. The valley lies between the counties of Cornwall and Devon and is in some ways a hidden valley; much of the summer tourist traffic passes us by on the two main routes to the north and south of us (25 mins away). Being so close to Devon means that Dartmoor is a very short drive away and the beaches of both coasts are easily accessible within an hour. And whilst the area is lovely to explore the house itself and the much loved garden are an attraction in themselves. Our home is not for those who like `easy wipe` order- it is beautiful, unique and quirky; no two rooms or even two stairs on either staircase are the same size. Some walls are four feet thick and there are granite carvings over doorways and fireplaces. If you like old buildings you will love it here. The city of Plymouth (sailing, boat trips, Art Deco Lido, theatres, galleries) is fourty minutes away by car and a lovely local train can also take you there. Exeter and Truro are about an hour away. Eden Project is 40 minutes. If you enjoy ‘wild swimming’ there are places close by.
