Bungalow in leafy Athens suburb on foothills of Mount Parnis

I live in a lovely modern timbered bungalow in a leafy suburb of northern Athens, overlooking central Athens and the sea to the south, Mt Parnis to the north.

The house has beamed ceilings throughout. We had it built in 2002. It has two bedrooms, one full bathroom and one WC/shower. Air-conditioning throughout, a grand piano, plenty of character. The spacious living area is open plan, with living room, kitchen and dining area leading onto a verandah overlooking a copse of pine trees in a quarter of an acre of land, with seating and table. The house is in a wooded suburb, with almost exclusively newly built villas. There is parking for two cars in the garden.

Greece is blessed with too much sunshine, so when we occasionally have snow in winter (usually higher up), it is cause for great merriment in square and parks, and an excuse for neighbourly toings and froings with great pans of hot bean soup.

About the location

We are 50 mins from central Athens, by car and tube. The Attika Highway, joining the Peleponissus peninsula with Athens, the airport, the Olympic stadium, is 9 km from the house. You will need to hire a car here.

The Athens-Thessalonika Highway is 8 km away. The scenic drive over Dionysos mountain to the sea and the ancient town of Marathon takes about 50 minutes. Other sandy beaches to the south are 40 mins by car.

We have a small shopping complex in the main square, 500m away. It includes a pharmacy, hairdressers, newsagents and a general kiosk. Baker`s, greengrocer`s and butcher`s are 1.5 km away. Larger supermarket is also 1.5k from the house. An ATM of the National Bank of Greece is 500m away.

Athens is modern, vibrant city full of ancient masterpieces. Walk round ancient ruins, museums, open markets, till you drop. Sit in open-air cafes looking up at the Acropolis. Visit the new Acropolis museum or the state of the art concert hall. Travel on the new metro with its marble stations, each with museum showcases full of artefacts. Experience unforgettable Greek hospitality, wonderful food in open-air tavernas. Swim from sandy beaches, walk on pine-clad mountains or visit beautiful ancient sites.
