Lovely period home in central England

Comfortable period home in central England with excellent transport links.
Built in 1906 for a prosperous Nottingham merchant to retire to, our home retains original features including stained glass, fireplaces and a Minton tiled hallway. It has three double bedrooms, living room, library and a back sitting room and kitchen overlooking a large, lovely private garden. It is in a pleasant established neighbourhood of mainly detached and semi-detached older homes and we have great neighbours.

It is a 3 minute walk to a small square of shops with a fishmonger, butcher, baker, small supermarket, pub, take-aways and cafes, and 10 minutes walk to the beautiful Elvaston country park with its Victorian gardens (free entry).

About the location

I would say it is semi-rural. Step out of our front door and walk left and you will find the shops within a couple of minutes. Walk right and within minutes you are walking beside green fields with sheep, horses and a lovely river. Walk a little further, no more than 10 minutes, and you have over 300 acres of parkland, woodland and historical gardens.

A glance at the map will show how we are perfectly located for exploring the UK. The M1 motorway stretching north and south is less than 3 miles away and links up with major roads going east and west. Drive to London in 2.5 hours or Birmingham in 1 hour - or go by rail - less than 2 hours to London and 45 minutes to Birmingham. East Midlands airport with flights to Scotland and Ireland, as well as mainland Europe and America, is less than half an hours drive.

But there is plenty to see and do in the local area. A bus stop within 3 minutes walk has a very regular bus service to Nottingham (12 miles) or Derby (6 miles). You can walk or borrow bikes to cycle to Derby along the river (5 miles) or visit nearby villages with lovely pubs. There are lots of stately, historic homes close by including Calke Abbey (20 minutes drive), Kedleston Hall (20 minutes), Hardwick Hall (45 mins), Chatsworth (1 hr). We have lived here for over 30 years so have lots of local knowledge about places to go and visit.
